Mystic India rediscovers India, a land of many mysteries and fascinations, the one land that all desire to see. Home of the Himalayas, the tallest mountains, India is our world's largest and oldest democracy, and contains an amazing wealth of wisdom, culture and spirituality. And within this earliest civilization known to mankind, lie hidden mystical secrets. It lies hidden in India’s silent spirituality, making her a mystic land of meditation, contemplation and enlightenment.

For thousands of years, many have willingly left the comforts of their home and family and set off across this spiritual land in search of these secrets. Their aim has been to reach a deeper understanding of existence and share the meaning of life that would elevate the rest of humanity. Of all such journeys, perhaps none is greater than the true story of an 11-year old child yogi, Neelkanth, who took an extraordinary journey through the wonders of mystic India. An adventure of hardships and survival, faith and fearlessness undertaken by a child. The only one of its kind in the history of mankind.

From 1792 to 1799, Neelkanth walked alone, barefoot and barebody, 8000 miles for 7 years through the length and breadth of India. Carrying no maps, no food and no clothing, how he crossed the roaring rivers, faced ferocious animals and survived the freezing winter of the Himalayas, is still a mystery. It is a story of struggle, of kindness and of courage even when face to face with a man-eating lion.

Asia, India's leading wildlife, conservation and environment magazine, was started by Editor Bittu Sahgal in 1981 to raise awareness among Indians of their disappearing natural heritage. The overwhelming response to the magazine led to the birth of Sanctuary Cub, a children's nature magazine, in 1984 and to The Ecologist Asia (Indian edition of The Ecologist, U.K.) a journal dedicated to the issues of the environment, development and human rights, in 1993.
In the 1980s, Sanctuary Films produced two wildlife/conservation serials aired on Doordarshan, India's national television network. The first, Project Tiger, was a documentary while the other, Rakshak, was a narrative serial for children. The films were shot on 16 mm. and the Sanctuary team visited virtually every wildlife haven in India (stock footage available on request).

India-Picture will seduce you to a far off world. Maybe you know some of the places and people seen in the pictures. I am a Journalist who once studied Indology. I want to develop India Picture as a non-profit project. All income at present from the sale of the pictures will go directly back into the project. The collection of Pictures will be enhanced updated and modified as far as I can find time for this.
In the long term I will change the financing of the project from selling pictures to sponsorship. Though presently there is a lot of traffic (more than 2000 page impressions a day, still increasing). For sponsors there will be a separate page. So if you feel like sponsoring this site write me a few lines and I will contact you. The money will go into better technical equipment as Slide-Scanner, Content Management System or a faster Webspace. If there is more, I will take it for the supply of new Pictures.
Most of the pictures are scanned slides. - At present there is no other procedure that can produce comparable results. No digital camera can take pictures that have a size of 5000x3300, in a sum, 16,5 Million Pixelels. If not zipped such a picture is a file of up to 90MB. As a rule enlargements of parts of the picture make sense. You see an example beside. The marked sector has in spite of a high compression still more than 600KB or 2200x3000 pixels!
